You can build anything.

Run the crew, hit the schedule, handle the inspector, keep three subs from killing each other on site. That's the hard part, and you're good at it. What you can't do, in the middle of all that, is see whether the job is actually making money or quietly bleeding it.

So when do most contractors find out if a job was profitable?

When the final invoice clears. Which is the exact moment it's too late to do a single thing about it.

Here's the thing nobody likes to say out loud.

It's not that you're bad with money. You know your numbers. The problem is the numbers don't live anywhere. They're spread across a glovebox full of receipts, a bank app, a couple of texts from your PM, and your own memory. They never sit in one place at the same time until the job is over and you finally add it all up.

My dad ran jobs that way for 30 years. Commercial work in Georgia, churches and restaurants and shopping plazas, jobs with real money on them. He'd feel good about a job the whole way through. Then he'd total it up at the end and find out a fat chunk of his margin walked out the door in week three, on a change order somebody priced wrong and nobody flagged.

By then the building's up. You can't un-spend it.
